FIGHTING SHADOWS

RELEASE DATE: July 7th
Blurb
I come from a family of fighters. I always thought I’d follow in their shadows, becoming unstoppable in the ring. That changed the day I saved the life of a woman I loved, but could never have.
My brother hailed me as a hero, and my reward was a wheelchair.
Paralyzed, my life became an inescapable nightmare.
 Until I met her.
Ash Mabie had a heart-stopping smile and a laugh that numbed the rage and resentment brewing inside of me. She showed me that even the darkest night still had stars, and it didn’t matter one bit that you had to lie in the weeds to see them.
I was a jaded asshole who fell for a girl with a knack for running away. I couldn’t even walk but I would have spent a lifetime chasing her.
Now, I’m on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting the shadows of our past.
Fighting to reclaim my future.
Fighting for her.

Fighting Shadows

Prologue
Ash
“Where the fuck have you been?” a man’s voice growled as soon as I entered the conference room.
My eyes flashed to his for only a single second before I recognized them. The door had barely clicked behind me but I already wanted nothing more than to bolt. My heart raced and my mouth dried.
I had to get out of there.
“Um…” I stalled, giving myself time to formulate a plan.
“Sit. Down,” he ordered, pushing out the chair next to him, but there was no way I was getting that close.
“I’m good,” I said, taking a step backwards toward the door.
“Don’t even think about it,” he snapped. “I swear to God, if you so much as open that door…” His words may have trailed off, but the threat was clearly stated.
I swallowed hard, and slowly walked to the chair farthest away from him, perching on the very edge—waiting for just the right moment to escape.
He looked down at the name badge around my neck and quirked an eyebrow.
“Victoria?”
“You can call me Tori if it’s easier.” I tried to fake a smile, but it only seemed to infuriate him. He took several calming breaths, which did nothing to dampen the blaze brewing in his angry eyes.
“I’ve been looking for you, Ash.” He snarled my name.
“Oh, yeah? Well, mystery solved. Here I am.” I pushed back to my feet, but was halted when his fist pounded against the table. I jumped as my whole body flinched from the surprise.
When the room fell silent, I slowly looked back up to find him staring at me with a murderous glare. Even sitting down I could tell he was huge, and as he held my gaze, the tense muscles in his neck and shoulders strained against the cotton of his grey Henley. He blinked at me for several seconds before finding his voice again.
“You live in a homeless shelter,” he stated definitively, as if the words told a story all of their own.
And maybe they did.
“I work at a homeless shelter,” I quickly corrected.
Only he corrected me just as fast. “In exchange for a permanent place to live…In. A. Homeless. Shelter.” He enunciated every single syllable.
I looked away, because it was the truth.
A truth that I hated.
But the God’s honest truth nonetheless.
Tears welled in my eyes and I battled to keep them at bay.
My life was hard, but him being there made it infinitely harder. If I could just escape that room, I could disappear again. It wasn’t ideal, but neither was him showing up.
“I want you to leave.” I lied with all the false courage I could muster.
“I can’t do that. You stole something of mine.”
“Look, I don’t have your book anymore.”
A knowing smirk lifted one side of his mouth. “Liar,” he whispered, reaching into the chair beside him, revealing the tattered book and ceremoniously dropping it on the table.
My eyes went wide, and without a conscious thought, I dove across the table after it.
 That was mine.
Not even he could have it.
Just as quickly as the book appeared, he snatched it away and grabbed my wrist.
I slid off the table and tried to pull my arm from his grasp. It was a worthless attempt though because even if he had suddenly released me, his blue eyes held me frozen in place.
“Three fucking years,” he seethed.
“I had to,” I squeaked out as the tears streamed down my cheeks.
“Three. Fucking. Years, Ash. You took something that belonged to me.” He released my arm and pushed to his feet.
My mouth fell open and a loud gasp escaped as he took two impossible steps forward.
Pinning me against the wall with his hard body, he lifted a hand to my throat and glided it up until his thumb stroked over my bottom lip. Using my chin, he turned my head, and dragged his nose up my neck, stopping at my ear.
Sucking in a deep breath, he released it on a gravelly demand. “And I want her back.”
My breath hitched.
I’d waited years to hear those words.
If only I could have trusted them.
“Flint, please.”

Synopsis

When I moved to New York, I never dreamed that I would end up as a Top Twelve finalist for America's Favorite Dancer. I knew the competition would be a great opportunity for my career, but I had no idea it would turn out to be the best summer of my life. My golden ticket onto the show led to new friendships and hot steamy romances.

However, behind the cool, confidence that I showed the world was a broken heart that had never completely healed. Dance was my ongoing therapy, and I vowed to never let a man get close enough to hurt me ever again.

Instead, I kept my relationships the same way I liked to dance....fast and unbinding. Was I a heartbreaker? Maybe. But mostly just protecting my own heart.

Now, if I could only forget the love of my life, I would be okay, but until then I would continue to Just Dance.

*Just Dance is a companion novella in the Dancer's Desire series, which can be read alone, but is better as Book 2.5 in the series. It is a short story with a little bit of romance and a whole lot of fun.*

Excerpt

My heart stopped beating. “We can be friends,” he breathed, his lips intensely intimate along my neck. His lips hesitated over my throat. “Or we can be more.”

My nerves kicked into high gear. More? More what? I had to keep reminding myself of what he was. I also had to remind myself to inhale and exhale. He was playing with my emotions. One moment he was charming and the next, well, that was the question. I fought internally with how to respond. I wasn’t even sure if I could respond with his mouth so close to me.

Wrong

WrongWrong by LP Lovell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Warning- This book contains violence and sexual assault type material that may trigger a negative response in some readers. Tor is given to a bookie by her boyfriend to pay her debt. Jude thrives on violence and proving he is in charge, his only weakness being women. I enjoyed the book overall but at times I found it difficult that someone who is held hostage falls for her captor especially when that person is highly educated and has only been held captive for a short period of time. I would recommend this book to someone who likes an alpha male bordering on abusive. It's not a bad book, it just didn't do it for me. I WOULD much rather read a book about Jude's brother who seems like a more balanced character.

Tor

My life was everything I wanted it to be. It was mapped out and planned. I wanted it all, the career, the right husband, the white picket fence and kids. Until he was thrust into my world, ripping me from it. My carefully planned life shattered, proving to be nothing more than a cheap illusion, and now I’m living in this twisted form of hell, where enemies and friends are one and the same. I thought I wanted perfection. Now I don’t know what I want - perhaps not even my own freedom.

Jude

I define wrong. I thrive on the corrupted greed of others, on their trivial hope, and their false optimism. I am the bookie, and the bookie always wins. For those whose hopes far outweigh the depths of their pockets, well, let’s just say paying with your life is not just a figure of speech.

I have always been in control, until suddenly I’m not any more. The day one of my collectors dragged her into my office as payment on a debt, I should have killed them both right there, but I didn’t. Now she threatens my control, threatens everything I’ve built, and yet I still can’t kill her. Why can’t I kill her?

By the time I’m done with her, she may pray for death.

Everything is not always as it seems. Lust, blood, lies…Nothing this wrong should feel so right.

Stevie J. Cole

I love writing (obvious since I'm on here, right?) I don't have a specific genre - I just write whatever story manifests itself inside my brain.

Writing is like therapy. There is nothing else that I can lose myself in the way I can a story. It amazes me that words can take you away from reality and leave you in a dazed state once you've finished.

Aside from writing, I love sloths and mythology. I kind of have a thing for vampires, because let's face it, something about the fact that they fight the urge to bite your neck and drain the life from you is rather sexy. I have an irrational fear of the zombie apocalypse. I honestly cannot imagine a more horrifying way to go than by being ripped to shreds by a mass of mumbling, decaying, and oozing corpses with clicking teeth. Ugh! I just shuddered typing it.

Now the boring basics: I'm married with two wonderful children. I grew up in the south listening to a ton of grunge rock. Me and my sister have an obsession with going to concerts and getting front and center. We often fight over who can get the most swag from the band. I have an unhealthy obsession with Russell Brand's mind, and the smell of crayons is the most soothing smell there is.

I hope if you read my work that you will enjoy it. After all, writing is the most amazing magic trick of all... it puts the reader in the mind of the writer (kind of creepy if you think about it). It's scary inside my brain, watch out!

I hope you love my little worlds as much as I do.

Xx- Stevie J
